Where to Stay in Paphos
Short answer
Stay in Kato Paphos if it is your first visit or you will not have a car — the ancient sites, harbour and restaurants are walkable. Choose Coral Bay/Peyia for a sandy beach on your doorstep, the Old Town for a local feel, and Polis/Latchi for a quiet, nature-focused stay.
The area you choose matters more than the hotel. Paphos is spread out: the ancient sites and harbour are in Kato Paphos, the best sandy beach is 12–15 km north at Coral Bay, and Polis is about 45 minutes away on the north coast. Pick the wrong base and you will spend your holiday in a car or waiting for buses.
The short version
| Area | Who it suits | Walkability | Beach access | Nightlife | Need a car? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kato Paphos | First visits, short trips, no car | Excellent — sites, harbour and restaurants on a flat promenade | Small town beaches on a mostly rocky coast | The most in the region | No |
| Paphos Old Town | Longer stays, a local feel, tighter budgets | Good within the Old Town; about 3 km uphill from the harbour | None — bus or taxi to the coast | Quiet | No (buses/taxis) |
| Coral Bay / Peyia | Beach holidays, families | Fine around the bay; not to Paphos sights | The best: sandy Coral Bay | Some, mainly in summer | Recommended |
| Chloraka | Resort-hotel stays | Limited | Coastal hotels; drive to Coral Bay for sand | Little | Recommended |
| Geroskipou | Drivers wanting a beach and lower prices | Limited for sightseeing | Long municipal beach | Little | Recommended |
| Polis & Latchi | Slow, nature-focused stays | Fine locally | Latchi beach and Blue Lagoon boats | Quiet | Yes |
| Hill and wine villages (Tala, Kathikas) | Villas, views, wine | Minimal | None — every swim is a drive | Village tavernas only | Yes |
The areas in more detail
Kato Paphos: the default choice
The lower, seafront half of Paphos town, with the harbour, the Archaeological Park and the densest cluster of hotels and restaurants. It has two strips: the harbour end, where the sights and evening life are, and the resort-hotel stretch running north-west along Tombs of the Kings Avenue. Both are flat and joined by the coastal promenade. Verdict: the best all-round base for a first visit, especially without a car.
Paphos Old Town: for a local feel
The upper town, historically called Ktima, on a ridge about 3 km inland. It is where residents shop and work, with the municipal market, Kennedy Square and small museums. Verdict: good for longer stays and travellers who prefer a working town to a resort strip — but you will commute to the beach and the harbour.
Coral Bay and Peyia: for the beach
Coral Bay is the resort strip on the coast; Peyia village sits higher up the hill. You get the area's best-known sandy beach, the sea caves for sunset and the quickest access to the western Akamas. Verdict: the best base for a beach-first holiday. Paphos town is roughly 20–25 minutes' drive away, and local buses run to Kato Paphos.
Chloraka: for a resort hotel
A former village, now a quieter suburb just north of the Tombs of the Kings, with several large resort hotels along the coast. Verdict: fine if you have chosen a particular hotel and plan to spend much of your time there. Too far to walk to dinner and the harbour every evening in summer.
Geroskipou: east of the centre
A separate town on the eastern edge of Paphos, a few kilometres from the harbour, with a long municipal beach and its own centre. It is on the coast road towards Kouklia and Petra tou Romiou. Verdict: works if you have a car and want a beach and lower prices; less convenient for sightseeing on foot.
Polis and Latchi: the quiet north
Polis is a small town on Chrysochou Bay, about 35 km from Paphos; Latchi is its harbour a few kilometres west, where the Blue Lagoon boats leave. Verdict: excellent for a slow, nature-focused stay, and Latchi is the more convenient of the two if you will be on the water. Too far to use as a base for Paphos town sightseeing.
Hill and wine villages
Villages such as Tala, near Agios Neophytos, and Kathikas on the Laona plateau are mostly villa territory: views, space and cooler evenings than the coast. Verdict: lovely for a second visit or a longer stay with a car. Every outing, including every swim, starts with a drive. See wine villages near Paphos.
Where to stay by type of trip
For a first visit
Kato Paphos, as close to the harbour as your budget allows. You can walk to the main sights, the seafront and plenty of restaurants, and most tours pick up here. If this is a 2–4 day trip, it removes most of the logistics.
Without a car
Stay in Kato Paphos, ideally between the harbour and the start of Tombs of the Kings Avenue. You can walk to the main sites and the seafront, local buses run to the Old Town and Coral Bay, and most tours pick up here. Avoid the hill villages and Polis entirely. See Paphos without a car and getting around Paphos.
For families
Coral Bay for the beach, or a resort hotel with pools in Kato Paphos or Chloraka. Hotels between the harbour and the Tombs of the Kings give you the best mix of pool time and easy outings. With young children, being able to get back to the room for an afternoon rest matters more than being close to everything. More in Paphos with kids.
For couples
Kato Paphos near the harbour if you want to walk to dinner and sunset; a hill-village villa or Polis if you want seclusion and are happy to drive. See Paphos for couples.
If you want a beach on your doorstep
Paphos town's coast is mostly rocky with small beaches. If sand matters, stay around Coral Bay — but accept that you will drive or take the bus into Paphos for sightseeing and dinners.
If this is your second (or third) visit
Try Polis or a village house in the Laona hills. You trade convenience for quiet, views and a very different side of the Paphos region.
Out of season
Kato Paphos and the Old Town stay the most lived-in through winter. Resort areas and the nightlife strip are much quieter out of season, which suits some travellers and not others. Check the best time to visit Paphos before you choose.
Hotel, villa or apartment?
| Type | Best for | Trade-offs | Where you will mostly find them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort hotel | Families, short stays, pool time | Can feel cut off from local life; meals on site add up | Tombs of the Kings Avenue, Chloraka, Coral Bay |
| Villa | Groups, families, longer stays | You will almost certainly need a car; more self-catering | Peyia, Coral Bay and the hill villages |
| Apartment | Independent travellers, longer or cheaper stays | Fewer facilities; check the walk to the sea and any hills | Kato Paphos and the Old Town |
These are general patterns rather than rules — every area has a mix. The bigger decision is still location: a modest apartment near the harbour often makes for an easier trip than a smart villa you have to drive from every day.
Before you book
- Check the real walking distance to the harbour or beach, not the straight-line distance.
- "Sea view" in Paphos town usually means a rocky shore, not a sandy beach.
- If you are renting a car, check parking — it can be tight near the harbour.
- Uphill locations (the Old Town, Peyia village, hill villages) mean uphill walks back.
- Work out your arrival: see Paphos airport to the city for transfer options.
