Family
Paphos With Kids
Short answer
The family winners are Coral Bay (sandy, shallow, facilities), the Tombs of the Kings (kids love climbing into the tombs), a calm boat trip, Paphos Zoo and, in summer, the waterpark. The key is timing: outings at opening time, pool or beach through the afternoon, the harbour in the evening.
The daily rhythm that works
- Morning (from opening): the outing — an ancient site, the zoo or a boat trip.
- Midday to 4pm: pool, beach or rest. This is non-negotiable in July and August.
- Evening: the harbour promenade, an ice cream and an early dinner.
Paphos is compact, so with this rhythm you rarely spend long in a car. The mistake families make is copying an adult itinerary: two ancient sites before lunch, a drive to the mountains, a late dinner. Plan one proper outing a day and let the rest be water and shade.

Paphos by age
| Age | Best bets | Skip or be careful |
|---|---|---|
| Toddlers and under-5s | Coral Bay, Geroskipou beach, the harbour promenade, a morning at the zoo, a short trip on a larger, stable boat | Sea caves (unfenced cliffs), Petra tou Romiou (pebbly, shelves quickly), long drives |
| 5–10 | Tombs of the Kings, mosaic myth-spotting at the Archaeological Park, the zoo's bird show and animal encounters, the waterpark, a boat trip with a swim stop | Full-day jeep safaris, Troodos as a day trip |
| 11 and over | A small-boat trip to the Blue Lagoon, snorkelling, a try-dive, a half-day jeep safari, Avakas Gorge walked early | Bar Street in Kato Paphos — it is a late-night drinking strip, not a family evening |
Beaches with shallow water
Most of the Paphos town coast is rocky, with small beaches. For young children, that makes the choice simple.
- Coral Bay — the best family beach in the area: soft sand, gently shelving water, sunbeds, cafés and toilets in season. Go in the morning or after 4pm in summer; it is very busy at weekends and in July–August.
- Geroskipou beach — a long municipal beach east of Kato Paphos with facilities and room to spread out. Popular with Cypriot families, so weekday mornings are calmer.
- Vrysoudia and Alykes — small town beaches on the Kato Paphos promenade. Fine for a quick swim between sights, not for a full beach day.
- Lara Beach — wild and beautiful, but with no shade or facilities and a rough access track. Better with older children on a jeep tour.
Ancient sites with kids
The Tombs of the Kings is the better bet for children — it feels like exploring. School-age kids enjoy climbing down into the courtyards, but there are open drops and uneven steps, so keep little ones close. At the Archaeological Park, focus on the House of Dionysus and turn the mosaics into a myth-spotting game; skip the long walk to the far end of the site.
Both sites have very little shade. Arrive at opening, bring hats and more water than you think you need, and leave before the midday heat. Paphos Castle at the harbour is a 20-minute stop with roof-top views — a good short add-on rather than an outing in itself.
A heat strategy for summer
- Pick your months if you can. June and September give a warm sea without the peak heat of July and August. See the best time to visit Paphos.
- Front-load the day. Anything exposed — ancient sites, the zoo, walks — happens first thing.
- Use the water as the afternoon plan. Pool, beach, waterpark or a boat trip.
- Shade is rented, not natural. At Coral Bay most shade comes from umbrellas; bring a beach tent for babies if you prefer to avoid sunbed areas.
- Book child seats in advance for hire cars and airport transfers.
Rainy, windy or too-hot days
- Too hot: the Aphrodite Waterpark (seasonal, warmer months only — confirm dates) or a boat trip with a swim stop.
- Rainy: Paphos Old Town — the covered municipal market and small museums such as the Byzantine and Ethnographic museums. Check opening hours before you go.
- Windy: boat trips get cancelled when the sea is rough. Swap in the zoo or the Tombs of the Kings and keep the boat for a calmer day.
What to skip with young children
- Avakas Gorge — rocky and unsuitable for toddlers.
- Full-day jeep safaris — long and bumpy; choose a half-day if any.
- Peyia sea caves without close supervision — unfenced cliff edges.
- Troodos as a day trip — a lot of winding road for little ones.
Where families should stay
Coral Bay for the beach, or a resort hotel with pools between Kato Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings for easy outings. Chloraka suits families who plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel. See where to stay in Paphos.
Frequently asked questions
Is Paphos good for families?
Yes — it is compact, the sea is calm in summer and there is a good mix of beach, history and activities. Plan around the heat.
Which Paphos beach is best for children?
Coral Bay: soft sand, gently shelving water and facilities. Geroskipou's municipal beach, east of Kato Paphos, is a good second choice.
Is Paphos too hot for children in summer?
July and August are hot, and the ancient sites have little shade. It works if you do outings at opening time and spend the afternoon in the water. June and September are easier with young children.
Is the Tombs of the Kings suitable for children?
Generally yes for school-age children, who enjoy climbing down into the tombs. Supervise closely — there are open drops and uneven steps — and go early to avoid the heat.
What can you do in Paphos with kids when it rains?
Head to Paphos Old Town for the covered municipal market and small museums, or visit the zoo between showers. Check museum opening hours before you go.
Do you need a car in Paphos with children?
Not if you stay in Kato Paphos and mostly use the town beaches and harbour. For Coral Bay, the zoo and day trips, a car makes life much easier, although local buses reach Coral Bay and the zoo runs its own transfer bus.
