Beaches

This is Ayia Napa's category. Its bays have pale, fine sand and clear, shallow water — the postcard beaches most people picture when they think of Cyprus. Paphos town's coast is mostly rocky with small promenade beaches. You get one excellent sandy family beach at Coral Bay, the wild turtle-nesting bays of Lara and boat trips to the Blue Lagoon. If a beach outside the hotel is the whole point of the holiday, Ayia Napa is the stronger choice.

Nightlife

Ayia Napa in summer is built around clubbing, with a young crowd and late nights. Paphos has Bar Street in Kato Paphos — loud and late in season, but small by comparison — and a calmer harbour scene for a drink and dinner. Couples and families who want quiet evenings will find Paphos easier.

History, culture and food

Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage town: the Roman mosaics of the Archaeological Park, the Tombs of the Kings, the Sanctuary of Aphrodite and monasteries in the hills. Paphos Old Town and the wine villages add everyday Cypriot life and food. Ayia Napa has its old monastery in the centre and not much else in the way of sights.

Nature and things to do

Ayia Napa's nature is mainly Cape Greco, the headland of sea caves and cliffs just east of the resort. Paphos has far more within an hour: the Akamas, Avakas Gorge, the Peyia sea caves, boat trips and the forests and cedars further inland.

For families and couples

  • Families with toddlers who want shallow sand on the doorstep: the Ayia Napa side has the edge, though many families prefer neighbouring Protaras to central Ayia Napa. In Paphos, base in Coral Bay. See Paphos with kids.
  • Families with older children: Paphos — more to do beyond the beach, from the zoo to the Tombs of the Kings.
  • Couples: Paphos for sunsets, wine villages and quieter evenings. See Paphos for couples.
  • Groups after nightlife: Ayia Napa in summer.

Choose Paphos if…

  • You want to see things: ancient sites, monasteries, villages.
  • You like walking, gorges and wild coastline.
  • You are travelling outside the summer season.
  • You want variety across a week rather than the same beach every day.

Choose Ayia Napa if…

  • The best possible sandy beach is your top priority.
  • You are going in summer for the nightlife.
  • You are flying into Larnaca and want a short transfer.

Getting there

Your flight may decide this for you. Paphos Airport is roughly 20–25 minutes by road from Kato Paphos. Ayia Napa is served by Larnaca, on the other side of the island; landing at Larnaca and staying in Paphos means a drive of around 1h45. If flights into one airport are much cheaper or more convenient, that is a fair tiebreaker. More in Paphos airport to the city.

When you travel matters

Ayia Napa is a summer resort. Out of season it is very quiet, and the nightlife that defines it largely disappears. Paphos is a working town with ancient sites, villages and walks that are at their best from autumn to spring, when the heat is gone. For a trip between November and March, Paphos is the clear choice. In July and August, Paphos sightseeing has to happen early in the day — see the best time to visit Paphos.

Can you do both?

Not as a day trip. At around 2.5 hours each way, a return trip eats most of the day. On a trip of ten days or more, split the stay: a few nights on each side of the island. Otherwise pick one base and day-trip within your region — from Paphos, Limassol is about an hour away.
