Hiking Near Paphos
Short answer
The Paphos region has some of the best walking in Cyprus, but heat dictates everything: from June to September, hike early or not at all. The classic routes are Avakas Gorge, the Aphrodite and Adonis nature trails above the Baths of Aphrodite, and the forest trails around Cedar Valley in Paphos Forest.
What to expect
- Avakas Gorge: a short but dramatic walk between towering limestone walls. Rocky underfoot.
- Aphrodite & Adonis trails: waymarked circular routes from the Baths of Aphrodite with sea views over Chrysochou Bay.
- Cedar Valley: forest walking in the mountains, cooler than the coast but a long drive.
Who it's for
Reasonably fit walkers visiting from October to May, or anyone willing to start at dawn in summer.
Skip it if: Anyone planning to hike at midday in July or August.
How to choose
- Short on time: Avakas Gorge.
- Best views: the Aphrodite trail.
- Escape the heat: Cedar Valley (but budget a full day).
Before you book
- Carry more water than you think — at least 1.5–2 litres per person.
- Check route status after heavy rain; gorges can be closed.
- Tell someone your route. Mobile coverage is patchy in the Akamas and Paphos Forest.
